The fabric has been purchased. The pattern is ready. The sewing machine is prepared.
However, before the scissors touch the material, one important step is often overlooked: washing or pretreating the fabric.
This may feel like additional work. Some people worry that the fabric will fade, wrinkle, or delay the production process.
Skipping this step, however, can create a larger problem. A garment that fits perfectly may become too small after its first wash. Trouser length may change, and different materials used in one design may shrink at different rates.
So, should every fabric be washed before sewing?
The answer depends on its fiber content, finish, and intended care method.
During textile manufacturing, fibers and yarns experience tension, pressure, heat, and finishing processes.
When fabric is exposed to water, heat, and mechanical movement, some of that tension may be released. The fibers adjust their position, changing the fabric’s length or width.
This dimensional change is commonly called shrinkage.
The amount varies. Knitted fabrics are often more dimensionally unstable because of their open and flexible construction. Cotton, linen, rayon, and certain blended materials may also change after laundering.

Each should be handled according to its own care requirements.
Not every material should be placed directly in a washing machine.
1. Dry-Clean-Only Fabric
If the final garment will be dry-cleaned, do not wash the yardage with water merely to preshrink it.
The pretreatment should follow the garment’s intended care method.
2. Silk, Wool, and Sensitive Materials
Silk and wool exist in many constructions and finishes.
Some can be hand-washed, while others require professional cleaning. Incorrect moisture, heat, or agitation may change their dimensions, surface, or luster.

3. Coated and Special-Finish Fabrics
Water-resistant textiles, coated materials, synthetic leather, laminated fabric, and technical finishes require special care.
Ordinary washing may affect their coating, stiffness, appearance, or performance.
4. Sequined, Embroidered, or Heavily Embellished Fabric
Machine movement may damage sequins, beads, embroidery, foil, or glued applications.
Test the material and choose the gentlest permitted treatment.
5. Prewashed or Preshrunk Fabric
Some materials are supplied as prewashed or preshrunk.
A sample test is still useful because those descriptions do not necessarily guarantee zero dimensional change under every care condition.
The safest principle is to treat the fabric as the finished garment will be treated.
If the shirt will be machine-washed and air-dried, use a similar method before cutting.
If a dress will be gently hand-washed in cool water, do not pretreat the fabric using high heat and strong agitation.
The goal is to reproduce realistic care conditions rather than expose the fabric to an unnecessarily extreme process.
Start by checking the fiber composition and care instructions.
Then:
Measure the fabric before washing.
Secure raw woven edges with overlocking or zigzag stitching.
Separate dark and light colors.
Use the appropriate water temperature, detergent, and cycle.
Dry the fabric using its intended garment-care method.

(100 − 96) ÷ 100 × 100% = 4%
The fabric has shrunk by 4 percent in that direction.
Measure both the length and width because the results may differ.
Other washable components should also be considered, including:
Lining
Interfacing
Lace
Ribbon
Bias binding
Contrast fabric
Pocketing
Fabric patches
Combining prewashed outer fabric with untested internal materials may create uneven shrinkage.
For fusible interfacing, test it on prewashed fabric and assess the fused sample again using the intended garment-care process.
Advice for Fashion Brands and Garment Production
In industrial production, pretreatment does not always mean placing full fabric rolls in a domestic washing machine.
Factories may use fabric relaxation, industrial washing, steaming, finishing, or other shrinkage-control processes.
The essential requirement is to understand dimensional and appearance changes before bulk cutting.
Production records should include:
Fiber composition
Supplier and batch number
Test method
Water temperature
Drying method
Length shrinkage
Width shrinkage
Color change
Texture change
Final care instructions
Repeat testing when the supplier, batch, color, or finish changes.
Is One Prewash Enough?
For home sewing, one prewash may provide useful initial information.
For clothing that will be washed frequently, several test cycles can reveal longer-term changes such as continued shrinkage, fading, pilling, seam performance, and interfacing stability.
A fabric that remains stable after one wash may still behave differently after repeated wear and care.
